Some of you were interested in the process, which is a very simple algorithm (less than two pages of C++, and most of that is I/O, special cases, etc.). The score given for a win is
2 ln[exp(x)+1]
and for a loss is
2[x-ln(exp{x}+1)]
where in each case x is the opponent's overall score (every team starts with an overall score of zero). The overall score is formed by averaging the scores for each game. The process is repeated until the overall scores converge (actually, for 100 iterations, which I think is enough).
Fascinating stuff there Matthew. Good stuff with the Mikado - looking forward to some photos of you. The Battle for Happiness II is this weekend, Monday morning Cambridge time.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was next weekend, and on Sunday??
ReplyDeleteNah, this Sunday arvo at 4pm Merseyside time.
ReplyDeleteWell, when you said 'this weekend' while it was still the weekend, I thought you meant that weekend, not the next. Also, Sunday afternoon Merseyside time is Sunday morning Cambridge time.
ReplyDeleteI meant Paul Merson, the alcoholic Arsenal defender from the 1980s, not the river. You're so thick sometimes.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, feel free to send me updates as the match progresses.
ReplyDeleteBy what medium? The following are available: phone call, text message, instant message, MMS, email, blog post, Facebook post, Twitter update, sign language, carrier pigeon, semaphone, ESP, runes, Morse code, obscure bible passage references. Can you send me an email with a more thorough update on your life?
ReplyDeleteHalftime will be 4am or a touch earlier, Sydney time, right? I'll try to be in my room at that hour, so you can call if you like (though perhaps you like to call from work, which wouldn't offend me as long as you do so before 2:30pm). Email is also good.
